In a dramatic incident at the 2025 Las Vegas Grand Prix, Kick Sauber driver Gabriel Bortoleto has been handed a five-place grid penalty for the upcoming 2025 Qatar Grand Prix, following his collision with Lance Stroll on the opening lap.
WHAT HAPPENED
Bortoleto, who had started from P18, attempted an ambitious move into Turn 1 by diving up the inside of several cars. He made contact with Stroll’s car, spun into retirement on lap 2, while Stroll retired immediately following the impact. The stewards determined Bortoleto was at fault, citing “extremely late braking”.

THE PENALTY & ITS BASIS
The stewards issued:
- A five-place grid drop for Qatar.
- Two penalty points on his FIA licence.
They noted that the typical 10-second time penalty could not be applied since Bortoleto retired from the race.
In his own words: “It was my fault. I think I just misjudged the grip that I had … I braked like five metres too late.”
IMPLICATIONS & LOOKING AHEAD
- The penalty will significantly impact Bortoleto’s starting position in Qatar, making his challenge harder.
- For Stroll and his team, the incident compounds their disappointment from the early exit.
- The drama adds further intensity to the closing rounds of the season, as every position and point now matters.
