Minneapolis Woman Fatally Shot by ICE Agent During Immigration Operation
Minneapolis, MN — January 7, 2026
Renee Nicole Good, 37, was fatally shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in Minneapolis on Wednesday, according to the Minnesota Star Tribune.
Good’s mother, Donna Ganger, described her daughter as “one of the kindest people I’ve ever known.” “She was extremely compassionate,” Ganger said. “She’s taken care of people all her life. She was loving, forgiving, and affectionate. She was an amazing human being.”
The Minneapolis City Council released a statement describing Good as a resident who was out “caring for her neighbors” at the time of her death. Senator Tina Smith (D-Minn.) expressed her sorrow, calling Good “a U.S. citizen, a mother, and a Twin Cities resident” and saying she was “heartbroken and angry” about the incident.
According to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin, Good was shot after people reportedly blocked officers during an immigration-related operation. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem said at a press conference that Good “ignored commands to get out of the car” she was driving and allegedly attempted to run over an ICE officer, who then fired on her. Noem said the officer had been struck by the vehicle and was treated at a hospital before being released.
Local and state officials, however, disputed the federal account. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz stated he had reviewed a video of the shooting and cautioned the public not to accept “the propaganda machine” at face value. A video obtained by NBC News shows officers ordering a person out of an SUV in a residential area. The SUV reverses briefly and then drives forward as multiple gunshots are heard, before crashing into a parked car. It remains unclear what occurred prior to the recorded footage.
The FBI and the Minnesota Department of Public Safety’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension are investigating the shooting.
Renee Good graduated from Old Dominion University in 2020 with an English degree. University President Brian Hemphill called her death “yet another clear example that fear and violence have sadly become commonplace in our nation” and urged reflection and compassion during a “dark and uncertain period” in U.S. history.
The Department of Homeland Security recently deployed additional immigration agents to Minneapolis following claims made by a right-wing YouTuber about Somali-run day care centers allegedly receiving federal subsidies without caring for children. The Minnesota Department of Children, Youth and Families confirmed that all facilities, except one that closed in 2022, were found to have children present during compliance checks.
