May 1999, in this month Pakistan tried to occupy Indian territory. Pakistani troops intruded into Indian territory in the Kargil district of the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir (now the Union Territory of Ladakh). The first infiltration was reported by local herders on May 3, 1999. On 08 May 1999, the Indian Army started ‘Operation Vijay’. Operation Vijay aimed to capture Indian territory along the LoC, which was occupied by Pakistani infiltrators. The Indian Air Force carried out an airstrike on 26 May under ‘Operation Safed Sagar’ to support the Indian Army.

On 26 July 1999, the Indian Army declared Operation Vijay a success after recapturing all military posts occupied by Pakistani infiltrators in Kargil. In this war, 527 brave soldiers of India were martyred, 1363 soldiers were injured. At the same time, more than 700 Pakistani soldiers had died.

However, the main ceremony is held at the Kargil War Memorial in Drass, Ladakh. This year also a two-day ceremony has been organized by the Indian Army on 25 and 26 July at the Kargil War Memorial.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh attended the program as the chief guest on Wednesday. Cultural programmes, parades and performances by army bands also mark the celebrations. This year, the central government has also planned a year-long program to celebrate the silver jubilee of Kargil Vijay Diwas next year.
